Laurie van der Merwe
Laurie van der Merwe is a registered nurse with a diploma in General Nursing, Midwifery, Palliative Care, CDE Advanced Course in Diabetes Education, RAU Certificate in Diabetes Management and Postgraduate Diploma in Diabetes (Cardiff University).
She is currently the Diabetes Specialist Nurse and administrator of the Empangeni Centre for Diabetes with a managed care and private practice. She is also a Diabetes Partner Coach for Guidepost, a telemedicine company that connects people with diabetes and expert diabetes coaches.
She has been a committee member and Chairperson, DESSA KwaZulu Natal region and the DESSA NEC Vice Chairperson with the Education and Registration portfolios. She headed the DESSA NEC Education task team producing national training programme for health professionals to be registered as diabetes educators.
She was instrumental in starting the diabetes Kids Camps Association in KZN as the organiser of the camps, acting as secretary and then Chairperson of the Sugarbabe Foundation (formerly Diabetes Camps Association – KZN). She is a Facilitator of the DESSA diabetes course for Health Professionals.
She has been awarded the Novo Nordisk travel award in 2003 and the CDE Top Diabetes Educator award in 2009, as well as the CDE Centre with the most Community involvement in 2014.
