4 DAY DIABETES MANAGEMENT COURSE FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

DESSA offers various training courses in Diabetes.

1 DAY PEER COUNSELLORS COURSE ON BASIC DIABETES  MANAGEMENT:

This is a basic course for non-healthcare professionals who have an interest in diabetes. The programme offers the volunteer the knowledge and skills to support people with diabetes in self management. The cost to attend this course is R 500.00 per person. Please note that payment must be made no later than 7 working days before the scheduled course date .You will receive a flipchart as well as a certificate of attendance.

Facilitators are based in the following areas:

  • Kwa-Zulu Natal
  • Western Cape
  • Eastern Cape

 

4 DAY DIABETES MANAGEMENT COURSE FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS:

The national DESSA training course for Health Professionals is a DESSA and SEMDSA accredited, International Diabetes Federation based course. It consists of a 4 day Diabetes Management Course which will be run in various provinces. This is an ideal course for health professionals needing to improve their knowledge and skills in dealing with persons with diabetes.

The cost to attend this course is R 2800.00 per person. Please note that payment must be made no later than 7 working days before the scheduled course date. You will receive a manual as well as a certificate of attendance.

  • Bloemfontein

 

It includes lectures, workshops and case studies and will cover 4 sections –

Section 1

  • Classification
  •  Diagnosis and screening
  •  Risk factors and clinical features
  •  Pathophysiology

Section 2

  • Monitoring
  •  Management of diabetes mellitus
  • Medical nutritional therapy
  •  Lifestyle changes
  •  Therapeutics
    • Oral
    •  insulin

Section 3

  • Complications
    • Acute
    •  Chronic

Section 4

  • Diabetes Education
  •  Patient empowerment
  •  Psychosocial issues

On completion delegates will have to pass an open book test and receive an attendance certificate plus a 200 page manual.

REGISTRATION COURSE:

Those Health Professionals wanting to be recognised as DESSA Registered Educators within their scope of practice, must have attended a DESSA recognized diabetes management course (such as the DESSA Basic Course for Health Professionals, the CDE Advanced Diabetes course, the IDF course) and will require at least 5 years full time experience. For those with less than 5 years experience they will now be able to do an 8-18 month mentorship programme. It includes assignments, case studies, and practical hours of experience.

On completion of this they will be recognized as a DESSA Registered Diabetes Educator, within their scope of practice.

ACCREDITED DIABETES EDUCATION CERTIFICATION.

This certificate is awarded to those Healthcare Practitioners who have completed a Post Basic course in Diabetes Management through:
